Comments: To the comment above, the "grotesque" nature of the human form adds to the realism and the significance of the suffering of Christ. Without this it would be hard to imagine how great his love for man is, that he would give his life in such a way to allow us redemption. If he looked comfortable it wouldn't have seemed like such a sacrifice would it?

Comments: Was he really devoted to god as he shows or was he only making an appearance? The work of art suggests either way...

Comments: Brunelleschi did it when he saw Donatello´s JC in 1410... he felt jelous and tried to do something more...perfect. I like better Donatello´s work, it is much more human. Look for it and compare!

Comments: The "grotesque" nature of the work is enhanced because of the tendancy to only regard "beautiful" paintings as "good" the suffering here is evident becasue of the artists use of human perspecrive and a solid foundation of anatomy, along with Massacio these artists provided a foundation for the Early Rennasaincse to depict the human form faturally instead of idealizing it

Comments: Before we dare to pass comment on an artist's achievement we have to ensure that we are worthy of the honour. To read the comments above makes me squirm with revulsion at the prevailing great extent of ignorance in the 21st century. The least one can expect is for web-surfers to desist from critising what they are obviously miles away from understanding. To the discerning viewer it is simply awe-inspiring to observe the utter control, the total discipline, the strength of restraint, the contained force of Brunelleschi's masterpiece. None of us is worthy to comment on it. Just absorb the inimitable uncompromising excellence.

Comments: This work was made to compete with Donny and i like Donny's better. Donatello makes Jesus seem more human and expresses Jesus maybe 'as a peasent' an Brunelleschi says but he looks real and is fulled with love for humans
