Comments: I think they were referring to the quality of the painting, ie in this painting Jesus is done better than the other figures. Not as any commentary on the man himself.

Comments: I really love this painting because it symbolizes unity of the disciples. The disciples are quite like us in ways that we are followers of Jesus Christ. We are all together as servents of Jesus Christ,we were sent down here to serve the lord and to follow his commandments. By showing our love for Jesus we are demonstrating the whole being of the Lord and his miracles.

Comments: Yeah, did you guys know that the person to the left in the picture is a woman? Her name is Mary. Mary Magdalene. Supposedly she was his wife. St. Peter didn't like her, hence the reason he is leaning into her, his hand looks as if it is slicing across her neck. Its all quite fascinating. Rumor is that she was the Holy Grail. Not the chalice. Good thing I'm atheist. This whole painting makes sense now.

Comments: i think the most intriguing thing about this piece is the fact that the person sitting next to jesus is not a man but a woman, mary magdalene. wife of jesus she is dressed exactly as his opposite...da vinci was an amazing culpret of subversive female sneakiness within his works....

Comments: Have any of you noticed that the person to Jesus's right is actually a woman. It is said to be Mary Magdalene. Jesus is wearing a red shirt with blue drap and she is wearing a blue shirt with a red drap. They together make the shape of a "M" meaning marriage. yes Vinci thought Jesus and Mary Mag. were a couple. She is thought to be the real "Holy Grale" Peter is holding a Knife in one hand and the other hand is demonstrating a cutting motion to Mary's neck In the actual pic. she is the only one with red hair and Breast. (look closly) The postition on Jesus's right hand seems to be some what evil looking. Vinci's painting beatuiful as a piece of art but not as representation of correct scriptural accounts

Comments: There were 12 diciples count them. Why do you think that one is a women? Count them the one with the bag is Judus Iscarot. Why would Da Vinci place a women at the Lord's supper(the passover. I don't know where you found this small bit of information. Here is one for you the model that portrayed Christ was a prisoner and Da Vinci chose each one individually to represent what he felt each would be represented as correctly as possible.

Comments: I don't think it really matters whats going on in the picture. I think what really matters is how beautiful the painting is. Some people may believe different things but that doesn't change the quality of the painting. Each to his own.

Comments: Yes, the figure to the right of Jesus is indeed a woman ... and there may be one other woman there, too -- three figures to the left side of Jesus. Neither of these figures sport beards. The idea that the figure on the right is Jesus's wife is not far fetches; the Gnostic gospels tell us Christ was married. (The Gnostic versions, of course, did not make it into the regular Bible.) But whether or not this was Mary Magdalene is open to debate. As far as forming the letter "M" for "marriage," as poster G-Girl proposes, I'm no so certain. Afterall, DaVinci was Italian, and the Italian word for marriage, "nozzi," does not start with an "m." And why would DaVinci have gone to English for the word?

The story of Jesus and Judas being drawn from the same person is an old legend; I'm not certain there is any proof of it being fact -- but it makes for a fascinating tale. Apparently DaVinci sketched Jesus's face first, then finished all the other figures, to finally need a face for Judas. He is said to have searched through the streets for an appropriate face and finally found one he believed was perfect. While sketching him for Judas, the man, an indigent, remarked to the artist: "Don't you remember me? I once posed for you, year ago. You drew me as Jesus." What I find most remarkable about his story is that DaVinci, with a mind like no other, would not have been likely to forget a face. I personally don't believe the story, but, again, it's a wonderful tale.

I am of the persuasion that Mona Lisa is actually a feminized version of DaVinci's own face. That stunt would have pleased the artists, I'm sure, and seems to be in keeping with DaVinci's own work methods. Which also explains that enigmatic smile.

Comments: hey, I read your comment on the last supper. I am not sure how old it was or if you still remember it, but you asked where leonardo got his model for jesus. The answer is that leonardo searched the city for a very long time, chosing people faces that would fit each person in the painting. for judas he went into a jail and looked at criminals. for jesus he finally found a perfect special face belonging to a young nobalman. he is said to have a face unlike anyone else in the city. I got that information from the biography "Leonardo Da vinci"
If you want the exact names, dates town, please refer to the book which can be aquired in your local libary.

Its too bad such a beautiful painting is so incorrect. It says often in the bible that jesus and his deciples RECLINED while eating. their table was on the floor and they did not have chairs. at that time and place is was very common to lounge on blankets and pillows while thay eat. the other inaccuracy is these people are blond/brown haired and blue eyed. Jesus was not white contrary to how everyone portrays him, he lived in the middle east and had olive skin and dark hair and eyes, almost like a mix of every race. I don't want to put to much of a blame on leonardo, for all the other painters did the same thing. Aside from the historical flaws Leonardo did an excellent job. (he actually drew the table and background to look like the that of the room and table where the monks ate.

Comments: Judas is not the one with the knife. He is the one clutching his money bag.(which is filled with 30 pieces of silver, the amount of money it the romans gave him for telling them where Jeseus is.)
St Bartholmew is the one holding the knife. He is represented with a knife because he was a butcher.

Comments: This is a beautiful piece, it's composition is flawless. But as a Christian and a student of Jewish custom it is clear that this portrayal is not historically or culturally accurate. You must keep in mind that this work was not done in the same century that Christ lived, Leonardo was not a christian, and he did not care if it was accurate. The holy grail is missing because Jesus took his cup, of course everyone has a cup, it was a meal. The Bible never refers to the "Holy Grail". Jesus took the 4th cup of the Sedar Meal, and blessed it. this is the Jewish custom for the passover, and where Jesus reveals the suffering that He was about to endure.

Comments: One note on the coloration of Jesus and John (or whomever you believe it to be. The question is more what did Leonardo think than what is true). Leonardo was using traditional iconographic colors in relation to Jesus and the Beloved Disciple. In iconography red symbolizes divinity and blue humanity so Jesus is always wearing red as his primary clothing (his divinity) but he is cloaked in blue (the Incarnation). Humans who are considered holy have blue as their primary clothing color (because they are human) and are cloaked in red (symbolizing the Holy Spirit - the divine persence - within them). This coloring scheme is the same throughout all of iconography.

Comments: Not only is an M but theree are two M-s in the painting. Christ is the middle of them and serve as united part of two M -s created by the two groups on both sides, left and right, east and west. This show that the Truth is not in one of M's but in the Middle, or center.

Comments: Letter M in the painting means that in the End the people who are inclueded in the M will be the first to be close to Christ.
Mary, Peter and Judah. The last two did betrayed Christ,so they will be first to come to him, as keys. They are two branches of the Christianism and located in the West.
M is Messiah and Jesus is more on the left of it, closer to the East's side, left side of the picture, but he iss the door, which is between the two windows, two churches, which fight with eacch other. Mary is Vatican's symbol on the right
