Comments: I can not believe I am the first to leave a comment regarding this masterpiece "Fortitude." What I see is an extremely strong woman who not only is a "ruler"(according to the septer she is holding) but also the fact she is bringing new life into the world. I do believe Botticelli named the portrait of this model wisely. It takes great strength to be a female leader in a male dominated world and even greater strength and fortitude when also bringing another life into the world.

Comments: I totally agree with the people above me, this is an excellent piece of work. But I do disagree with the pregnancy part. From what I've learned, in the Renaissance, most women where portraited as "pregnant" because that was attractive to men, for that is what the women were for...having babies. So I don't think Botticelli ment for this woman to actually be pregnant, but just a woman. Again, I could be wrong.

Comments: Boticelli, could have been my lover in the past I feel, and look, like an italian women. Since I was a child, I stay completly impressed when I look to his paintings, and especially the selfportrait makes me cry of emotion. It seems stupid but has been like this for years, and I return one and once again to UFFIZI Gallery, and the feelings are de same.
About "Fortitude" - a women occupies the power chair and hold a septer on her hands.
Marylin, o.k., it was a women, pregnant, young, beatiful, ... with an extremelly SAD face. She looks not in front but as she was thinking not be there.
Hillary, I think you are right, pregnancy was a good point for a woman at that time. Not nowdays.

The picture is amaizing for mr, not because the power it transmittes, but because THE POWER HAS A DIFFERENT FACE, more sweet, more "take me away from here".

I woould like to ghange opinions about SANDRO.

Comments: I now get what people mean when they describe someone as a "Botticelli Angel". Even here, this strong figure of silence and power, she has an angel's face, an innocence radiates from her. But she is strong, she would have to be, to rule a country and bear a child. The detail and colour that went into this painting are exquisite. Botticelli is unsurpassed in his masterpieces. He is by far my favorite artist of the Renaissance.

Comments: I believe this artwork to show great power . As it illustrates an overwhelming power and yet emanate vast fragility ... The creature's face expresses sadness and distance from the viewer . It's majesty , divine beauty and vulnerability grasp one's mind creating a form of excitement and thoughts on whether The Face holds expression of regret , dislike of inability , pure sadness or feel of guilt...

Comments: This painting done by Botticelli is on of the loveliest paintings I have seen. It allows the viewer to experience the essance of the grace and stregnth of the feminaine being that is within evey woman, without the complexities of extreme realism. Botticelli was known for his graceful, elegant femineine forms. In this painting, he not only expresses the grace and beauty of a woman but her stregnth as well. This peice of work compared to his others is earlier and somewhat different in it's move toward Humanism.

Comments: Alright, so this is an amazing painting, and I absolutely love all of Botticelli's work. However, all comments about pregnancy are not true. It is known that in that day is was common to portray women as if they were pregnant because it was a symbol of beauty. If you look at any of Botticelli's paintings of women during this time period, you will find that all have a pregnant quality about them, but according to art historians, they were by no means pregnant, just very feminine.

Comments: for me this is one of the marvellous work of botticelli.. it depicts dispirited women of that time... i think the painting is expressing every women in her position having such a tremendous power thinking that being in that situation she could have everything that she wants and yet she is feeling incomplete and selfless. this is such a fascinating work of an enthused artist.

Comments: this is the best portrait I have ever seen in my life by Mr. Botticelli To me it shows that women have power to do whatever they want and get whatever she wants, but it also make it seems like she's down a little and that something or someone is holding her spirit back, but other then that I think its a marvellous picture portrait
